Let's Eat Cake
Before we go any further, let’s talk a
little about budget.
It really is important to have a budget in
mind. Please don’t think that if you mention an amount, your cake designer will
automatically charge that much! Maxing out your budget is never my aim.
For example, if I haven’t been given any
indication of budget, and you ask me for an elaborate 5-tier cake, I will spend
hours coming up with a design and painstakingly pricing up each handcrafted element.
If we then find at the consultation that your budget is more in line with a
simple 3-tier cake, we are all going to be disappointed and frustrated.
If you’re not sure what to expect of wedding
cakes prices in general, ask your chosen cake designer(s) for a guideline price
and take it from there. Bear in mind that the final price will depend not only
on the amount of actual cake but also on the level of skill and detail in the
decoration, as this is where many hours are spent.
Once you have heard back from your chosen
wedding cake designer(s), arranging a consultation is next on the agenda. I work from home and I like to approach the consultation
as an informal chat over a cup of tea and some cake.
First things first, the cake has to taste
good. As beautiful as the design may be, the quality of the bake is equally
At my consultations, we have a look at my initial
sketches and discuss which designs appeal the most. If until this stage you felt you didn’t know
what kind of cake you wanted, it will all start to come together now! You’ll
find things you like and things you don’t, and between us we’ll settle on a
design that’s a perfect fit for your day.
