From surfing to learning Spanish to taking a chocolate tour, a honeymoon in Costa Rica has much to offer. This Central American nation is a hot spot for young travelers, but also home to a large population of retirees, business owners, and families. You’ll be hard pressed not to find what you’re looking for on a honeymoon in Costa Rica. Although prices have risen with the popularity of Costa Rica as a tourist destination, the country still offers some very affordable entertainment, accommodation and dining options. Don’t be afraid to shop around!
While the beach culture may be what initially attracts you, here are three other things you should make time to experience during your honeymoon in Costa Rica:
- Sea turtle nesting. Various turtle species come to lay their eggs along Costa Rica’s coasts from February to October, and numerous guided tours are available.
- Canopy tours! For adventurous couples, zipping along on a cable high in the tree tops is the perfect way to get acquainted with Costa Rica’s cloud and rain forests.
- Relax in a hot spring. Costa Rica’s volcano laden landscape produces an array of naturally heated mineral pools and mud baths. A variety of settings are available, from rustic outdoor pools to high end resort facilities.

When to go:
Costa Rica’s climate varies considerably from the coastal areas to the higher mountainous regions and everywhere in between, but the average temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures should be expected along the coast, and a high SPF sunscreen is a must! This close to the equator the sun is very strong, and a sunburn could really put a damper on your honeymoon in Costa Rica. Costa Rica enjoys sunshine all year round, and even in the rainy season (May - November), you can expect clear skies the majority of the time with tropical afternoon showers. The dry months (December – April) are the busiest as they also correspond with Christmas vacation and Spring break (in North America). Make sure to make reservations as far in advance as possible if you plan to travel during these times. That being said, a honeymoon in Costa Rica will be romantic, relaxing and adventurous no matter when you go, and you can expect warm weather year round.
Flight Information:
Continental operates a flight to San Jose International Airport in Costa Rica from Dublin with one stop en route in Newark. The total flying time is approximately 17 hours.

The local currency is the Colon however the US Dollar is also used.
Travel Documents
Visitors from Ireland do not need a visa to enter Costa Rica for a stay of up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid at the time of travel and not expire before the end of your trip, and you must be in possession of a return ticket. The bus system is well established in Costa Rica, though a rental car can be a convenient option for those who really want to enjoy their freedom on their honeymoon in Costa Rica.
