Choosing Your Wedding Cake Maker

by Gail@LizzieMays

Oh, the possibilities!  Wedding cake designs are limited only by your imagination; whether you’d like something traditional or modern, simple or elaborate, your wedding cake will be a focal point at the reception.  If you don’t have an idea in mind already as to what kind of cake you’d like, don’t worry, here are a few tips to get you started.

Choosing your cake designer

Do some research here and select one or two cake makers whose work you admire. Ask your friends and family for recommendations, use Google and Facebook to find businesses in your area (or near the venue, if it is a long distance). Look at their previous work – is the finish of a high standard, have they got good reviews and nice comments?  Many cake makers, like myself, work from home – in this case it’s important to ensure they are HSE registered and insured.

Making enquiries

It is useful to have some information to hand when you start your enquiries. This will help the cake designer come up with suggestions that work for you in terms of design, taste and budget – all are equally important! Here are some details that will start the ball rolling:

- wedding date

- number of guests (to calculate the amount of cake you'll need)

- flavour preferences

- venue (to calculate delivery costs, if any)

- theme of the day - e.g. black tie / rustic / Alice in Wonderland…

- colours & patterns - e.g. dresses, invitations, flowers

- budget

If you have a collection of photos, do send on your favourites – they don’t have to be cake related! Personally, I love to take inspiration from other sources like invitations, jewellery and patterns.

In my next post, I’ll talk about budget and arranging a consultation. Stay tuned!
